Move-in day marks one of the busiest days of the year at University of the Sciences, and kicks off the Welcome Week for the more than 500 new students who are slated to arrive on campus on Friday, Aug. 22. The annual event will unite new students and their families with the USciences community as they arrive to campus and check in at the Athletic/Recreation Center (ARC), from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m.
Current USciences students, dubbed “Arrival Survival Team,” will be on hand to help new students and their families unload their cars and move boxes into their residence halls. Later that day, students and their parents, along with faculty and staff, will assemble in the ARC for the University’s 12th annual convocation ceremony, which begins at 2 p.m.
This year’s keynote speaker is local news personality Tracy Davidson, who also serves as a board of director of Philabundance, a local food bank and hunger relief organization. Davidson is an Emmy Award winning broadcast journalist who covers consumer reporting and health news in the Philadelphia region. Currently an anchor at NBC 10, Davidson can be seen on NBC 10 Today each weekday from 4 a.m. to 7 a.m.
Passionate about many causes close to her heart, Davidson dedicates much of her personal time to community service. She co-chairs Philabundance’s Ceres Society, an exclusive group of women fighting hunger through advocacy, action, and financial support; and has also been honored for her advocacy efforts on behalf of victims of domestic abuse by the Laurel House in Norristown, Pa., and Vera House in Syracuse, NY.  She also served as the honorary chair of the March of Dimes Walk America/March for Babies for more than 10 years.
As an institution focused on community service, students, staff, and faculty are encouraged to stop by the ARC during move-in day to drop off a nonperishable food item or monetary donation to help benefit Philabundance.
The classes of 2018, 2019, and 2020 are a diverse group of aspiring healthcare professionals and leaders in such majors as pharmacy, biology, physical therapy, healthcare business, and health policy. For the 2014-15 school year, incoming students represent more than a dozen U.S. states, ranging from Oregon and Texas to Pennsylvania and New Jersey; as well as four different countries.
An array of activities are planned for new students during the University’s “Welcome Week” to help familiarize them with the USciences and Philadelphia communities. New students will also have the opportunity to win some USciences swag during move-in day, by sharing their experience on social media by using #usciences2014 and @usciences.
