The doctorate of occupational therapy (DrOT) program at University of the Sciences was granted the full seven-year accreditation by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) after recently receiving a two-year extension of the accreditation term previously awarded last spring.
“This awarded extension reflects our department’s effort to further build the program and continue to develop it for our students,” said Michelle E. Cohen, PhD, interim chair of the Department of Occupational Therapy. “Of the accrediting organization’s 206 standards, we had only two ‘non-compliant’ standards listed last spring, and they have since been fully resolved.”
Five years is the standard term for initial ACOTE accreditation, and seven years is the maximum term granted for initial accreditation of a DrOT program with no areas of non-compliance.
ACOTE previously fully accredited the DrOT program on May 7, 2013, for five years with an interim report due April 2015, and an on-site evaluation scheduled during the 2017-18 school year.  At that time, the non-compliant issues included three faculty members without terminal degrees, as well as non-doctoral faculty teaching in the program. In the past year, however, the program’s faculty members have received their doctorate degrees; thus, fulfilling each of the accreditation standards. With this extension, the next on-site evaluation of the program has been moved to the 2019-20 academic year.
University of the Sciences sports one of only five direct-entry DrOT programs in the United States, as well as the only one based on the East Coast. Dr. Cohen credits much of the DrOT program’s development to the ongoing efforts of the program director, Paula Kramer, PhD, OTR/L, FAOTA.
